These pages from my first job are special to me, as I wrote every word on them, as well as designing and laying them out.
Community newspapers are a great place to cut your teeth as a designer and a journalist.
These publications are funded through advertising just like any other, except the ads are sold in blocks, often irregular sizes, and sit together on the pages in a cacophony of colour. Getting a printed product to look slick, fresh and modern is an art form, and to this day when I open a paper and see a gorgeous layout, I whisper a ‘well done’!
